A Movie to Watch: August Evening

august evening

The first time I heard about this movie was when my parents were asking me to find out where it was showing. They were all excited about it and I didnt know why. I will tell you why in a bit. However their excitement peeked my curiosity for this movie. This is an independent film and I'm sure you will not hear about it. It might not come to your town. This film is a Doki-Doki production film and was written and directed by Chris Eska.

Now I normally do not watch independent films. The last one I watched was a good one too, "Turtles Can Fly" was the last one I watched. However because my parents were so excited I thought "HEY, why not?"

Ok so this film is in Spanish BUT dont fret, it has English sub-titles. The film is based on a small Mexican family. This family is of a husband and wife, played by Pedro Castenada and Raquel Gavia, and their widowed daughter-in-law, played by Veronica Loren. This daughter in law is more of a daughter to this couple and she takes care of them. However their life is turned upside down with Maria's sudden death (Raquel Gavia) and then Jaime ( Pedro Castenada) looses his job because of his age. These are undocumented immigrants and you see the struggle that they have to endure . The couples real children seem to have distanced themselves and Lupe (Veronica Loren) is more of a real daughter to him that his own daughter and son. Now that Maria is gone Lupe feels she cant not leave her father in law. She feels the need to care for him as if he was her own father. However, she finds herself, almost unwillingly, falling in love and is torn between her new love and her loyalty to her late husbands father. This is truly a great movie. It being a low budget film, it had a big movie feel. It was well thought out and well put together. You have a family that has forgotten how to be a family find their way back to their father and a woman, who learns that there is more space in her heart to love everyone including what was in the past. Dont let the fact of it being a Spanish movie scare you into not watching it. You will surely miss out on a good movie. Im not one to say a movie is good when its not. I will tell you "DONT WATCH THAT MOVIE! DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY" but when I find a good movie, I will tell you "YOU HAVE GOT TO WATCH THIS!" I mean, my two oldest daughters loved it. The do not understand a LICK of Spanish but they were on the edge of their seats waiting to see what was going to happen next. They understood it...these are little girls ages 11 and 9. They got the plot, they got the story and they LOVED IT!

After the movie, were were graciously greeted by the actors who played the main characters in this movie. We had a Q&A and when we went to the lobby we got to take pics with them. So why were my parents excited. Well the truth is, Pedro Castenada who plays Jaime in the movie, well he's my dads first cousin. So the main character in this movie is my cousin. This is NOT the reason Im raving about this movie, it is truly a good movie. And you should go watch it. Tell your friends and if and when you do, come back here and let me know what you thought of it.
